Orfeo ed Euridice
Orfeo ed Euridice
The opera Orfeo ed Euridice is the ultimate praise of love. On, in and under the water of the pond of the Soestdijk Palace, in the heart of the province of Utrecht, Jos Thie directs an overwhelming musical spectacle.
For Orfeo ed Euridice (1762) Christoph Willibald von Gluck edited the classic myth of Orpheus the singer, who with his enchanting voice and stringed instruments was even able to move nature. If Orfeo mourns over the dead of his beloved Euridice, Amore, the god of Love, decides that the singer may recover in the underworld. Amore poses a condition: Orpheus must not look at Eurydice until they are returned in the upper world.
In the story of Orfeo ed Euridice the contrast between the upper world, where the live are living, and the underworld where the dead dwell, play an important role. Director Jos Thie makes these worlds visible by using settings in and under water. The water, the rivers, the trees and the island in the pond transform into a splendid setting for the opera.
